Is there really anyone out there who doesn’t love a good “burger-in-a-bowl” recipe? Because it’s definitely one of my favorite meals, and this one has made it to the top of my list!
Between the crispy baked French fries, bacon, avocado and special sauce, I managed to include all my favorite burger goodies – and then some – in this recipe!
If you’re craving a burger and fries but want to go the healthier route, or are doing a Whole30, then you NEED to make these bowls!
They’re simple enough for weeknights, customizable based on what you have on hand, and perfect for meal prep. Plus, skipping the bun means you can load up on all your favorite toppings without it feeling heavy.
Once you try burger bowls this way, you might not go back to the traditional version! They’re just as satisfying, easier to make, and packed with flavor in every bite.
I’m warning you though that after making this meal once, you’re going to start craving it every day!
What Is a Burger Bowl?
A burger bowl is a deconstructed burger served in a bowl instead of a bun! It typically includes seasoned ground beef, fresh toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles, and a classic burger sauce, all served together for an easy, customizable meal. Burger bowls are my favorite meal – you get all the best parts of the burger!
This version is my favorite – packed with so much flavor and protein – and paired with crispy fries, making it just as satisfying as a classic burger while staying paleo and Whole30 friendly.

Why Burger Bowls Are Better Than Traditional Burgers!
We all love burgers! They are hands down my favorite food and I’m picky about them – I like them LOADED!
These burger bowls are lighter, customizable, and perfect for weeknights because they’re easy to throw together!

What You Need to Make the Best Paleo Burger Bowls
It’s basically everything you’d need to make a reallllly good burger, minus the bun and the cheese! I promise you won’t miss them though.
Here’s everything you’ll need for the burger bowls:
Fries:
- Russet Potatoes (see below for a sub)
- avocado oil or olive oil
- sea salt
- black pepper
- garlic powder
- nutritional yeast, optional (for flavor)
Special Sauce:
- paleo friendly mayo, homemade or purchased
- dijon mustard
- paleo friendly ketchup
- dill pick relish or chopped dill pickles
- garlic powder
- onion powder
Bowls:
- paleo friendly bacon (no sugar added for Whole30)
- ground beef (I used 80% lean grass fed beef)
- sea salt and black pepper
- garlic powder
- greens of choice (I used hearts of romaine)
- cherry tomatoes
- purple onion
- Sliced dill pickles (no sugar added for Whole30, add as many as you like)
- avocado

How to Prepare these Burger Bowls
Preheat your oven to 425°F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. *For extra crispy fries, soak them in cold water for 30 minutes prior to proceeding.
Toss the sliced potatoes in the oil and sprinkle all over with the seasonings. Spread out on the baking sheet so that no two fries touch, this will helps them roast very crispy. Roast them in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
To cook the bacon in the oven too, lay it out on the second baking sheet and bake it for 16-20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until it’s cooked to preference. You can do this in the same oven with the fries on a different rack. If you prefer, you can pan fry the bacon in a large skillet until crisp.
While the fries and bacon bake, make the special sauce. Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl until well combined and set aside.
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and drizzle a little bit of oil in the skillet. Once hot, add the beef and sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirring and breaking up lumps until browned.
This recipe will make 4-6 burger bowls. To assemble the bowls divide the greens between the bowls and top with tomatoes, onions, pickles, the beef, cooked bacon and hot fries. Lastly, slice the avocado and divide between the bowls and serve drizzled with the special sauce, or leave it on the side for dipping.
Whole30 + Paleo Substitutions
White potatoes are Whole30 compliant but not all consider white potatoes paleo.
If white potatoes aren’t your thing, you can still enjoy deliciously crispy baked fries with your burger bowl! Just sub in either Japanese or white sweet potatoes for the russets.
The instructions for roasting them will be the same. I don’t love using orange sweet potatoes for fries since they just don’t roast up as crispy, but if you can’t find white or Japanese sweet potatoes, you can sub in orange sweet potatoes as well.
White sweet potatoes have a cream colored inside and look similar to a russet on the outside. Japanese sweet potatoes are dark reddish purple on the outside and cream colored inside.
The remaining ingredients in this bowl are both paleo and Whole30 friendly. Just be mindful of ingredients for bacon, pickles and mayo to make sure they fit with your dietary needs (no added sugar or additives.)

How to Make Crispy Fries (Oven or Air Fryer!)
Getting perfectly crispy fries at home is easier than you think! The key is removing excess starch and using high heat. Here’s exactly how to do it so your fries come out golden and crisp every time.
For the crispiest texture, use russet potatoes. If you don’t eat white potatoes, scroll up for my suggestions. Russets are higher in starch and lower in moisture, which helps create that classic crispy exterior.
- Peel if desired, or leave skins on
- Cut into even sticks for consistent cooking
Soaking the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes removes excess starch – this is the secret to crispy fries.
- Drain and rinse
- Pat completely dry with a towel (very important!)
Proceed with the oven baking instructions above.
Tips for best results:
- Don’t overcrowd the pan
- Use parchment for easier flipping
- Let them get deeply golden before removing
Air Fryer Method (Fast + Extra Crispy)
- Preheat air fryer to 380–400°F
- Toss fries with oil and salt
- Add to basket in a single layer (work in batches if needed)
- Cook for 15–20 minutes, shaking halfway
For extra crispiness:
- Increase temp to 400°F for last 2–3 minutes
- Don’t overcrowd the basket
Pro Tip!
If your fries turn out soft instead of crispy, it’s usually because:
- they weren’t dried well enough
- the pan or basket was overcrowded
- or the oven/air fryer wasn’t hot enough
Fix these small issues will give you perfectly crispy fries every time!

Why Your Burger Bowls Might Feel Boring (And How to Fix It!)
If your burger bowl feels a little underwhelming, you’re not alone. The good news? It’s usually an easy fix. Most bland burger bowls come down to a few simple mistakes, and once you know what to adjust, the difference is huge!
1. Not Enough Flavor in the Beef
Make sure to season the beef generously and don’t overcook to the point that it’s dry. I like to sauté my ground beef with a generous amount of salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder but you can also go wild with your favorite seasonings!
2. Skipping a Sauce (This Is the Biggest One)
Make a double batch of burger sauce if you need it! I promise my burger sauce is SO good you’ll want to make extra and dip everything in it! Use it generously for the bowls and to dip the fries.
3. Not Enough Texture Variety
A really good, memorable burger bowl needs flavor plus a variety of textures! The ingredients I used in my bowls ensure you have every texture to satisfy!
4. Not Building It Like a Burger
If everything is just tossed together, it won’t hit the same!
Fix it:
Layer it intentionally:
- Base (lettuce or greens)
- Beef
- Fries
- Toppings
- Sauce on top

How to Meal Prep These Burger Bowls
If you want to make these burger bowls ahead of time, you’re in luck! Simply prep the greens and all the veggies except for the avocado, which you’ll add right before serving.
Arrange the veggies in bowls or containers, cover and refrigerate. Make the sauce and keep it in a sealed container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Cook the fries and bacon as instructed and allow them to cool a bit before wrapping in aluminum foil and placing in the refrigerator. Cook the beef as well and keep it in a sealed container and refrigerate.
You can reheat the beef and bacon in a skillet, and the fries are best reheated in the oven on 350°F. You’ll want to heat until JUST hot enough to avoid overcooking.
Arrange the hot beef, bacon, and fries in the prepped bowls and add the avocado and special sauce to serve.

Paleo Burger Bowls with Fries {Whole30}

Ingredients
Fries:
- 2 large Russet Potatoes **peeled and sliced into fry shapes about 1/2” thick
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt ***
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon nutritional yeast optional (for flavor)
Special Sauce:
- 1/3 cup paleo mayo homemade or purchased
- 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon dill pick relish or chopped dill pickles
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Bowls:
- 6 slices paleo friendly bacon no sugar added for Whole30
- 1 lb ground beef I used 80% lean grass fed beef
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt or to taste
- Large pinch black pepper or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 cups greens of choice I used hearts of romaine
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes halved or sliced
- 1 medium purple onion thinly sliced
- Sliced dill pickles no sugar added for Whole30, add as many as you like
- 1 large avocado or two small ones
